Joe Liberman supports "Right to Lifense Plate"

A few months ago I wrote about the disturbing anti-choice license plates being issued in Connecticut. Under the guise of a pro-adoption theme, revenues raised by these license plates go to organizations that use misleading tactics of methods of questionable eithics to pursuade woment to proceed with unwanted pregnancies. You can read my original post on the subject here.

Since I wrote that original post, our Democratic Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal intervened with the DMV and forced them to suspend issuance of these plates. Nice job Richard!

Today I learned that our Neo-Con friend Joe Lieberman has come out in support of Choose-Life Inc. and their multi-state license plate effort. Jane over at FiredogLake did a great job catching this one. Joe's really batting 0% when it comes to women's rights lately. This is the same Senator that spoke out in opposition of state legislation that would require all hospitals to offer access to emergency contraception (RU-486) to rape victims. The man who claims to be a strong supporter of women's rights in his stump speeches and TV commercials stated that "in Connecticut another hospital is always just a short cab ride away." CT-Bob has an excellent diary on this topic, complete with maps showing just what an assenine comment it was.

The National Organization for Women and Connecticut Choice Voice are two great organizations supporting Ned Lamont in his bid to unseat our Joe Lieberman. Please send e-mails (contributions are good too) and thank these organizations for their support. Urge them to raise hell and call Joe out for this latest in a series of failures on women's issues.

Thanks to Maura for pointing this one out to me.

Oh, like any rape victim is supposed to be able to afford a cab, and actually FIND one in the middle of Hartford, in the middle of the night.

What a wanker!

We so desperately need people like Ned Lamont: with integrity and energy and the right ideas to represent us in Washington!

I'm as pro-choice as they come, and see this plate thing as a complete non-issue.

Well, the issue is that plates with the "Choose Life" slogan at least give the appearance that the State is endorsing that message; also, at least in some of the states that have "Choose Life" plates, the authorities have refused to issue similar "pro-choice" plates. I find that pretty disturbing.

Personally, I think all these special plates are stupid -- and most law enforcement folks agree, since it makes identification of vehicles more difficult. But theme and affinity plates apparently raise big bucks for the states that issue them; in these days of widespread hostility to taxes (i.e. unwillingness to pay the cost of services that people expect from their government), hidden taxes like special license plate fees are an easy choice for bureaucrats.

This man CONTINUES to amaze me. Is he a Republican or not? Ned should do a vicious ad calling him a Republican-Lite after the crap Joe pulled with that negative ad.

People, vote line B on August 8 cuz that's where the true issues are confronted and discussed. Real Democrats are pro-environment, ANTI-WAR, pro-labor and anti-Lieberman. No more DLC Republican Lites masquerading as Democrats anymore. That goes for Lieberman, AND Malloy.

National Organization for Women

You do not represent me - I am a woman and am pro-life which is not only pro-woman but pro-human life. You may think you embrace women's issues - but you don't. A woman's woman would never ever consider having an abortion that would kill her baby - a woman's woman would sacrifice her own life for that child. Abortion is simply selfish and sin no matter how you slice it. Men should be able to have a say so too - after all if the woman has the baby then the dad has to pay to support this child legally.

I really love this blog. Great job on a pro-choice stance. The only thing I want to point out is that emergency contraception is not the same as RU-486. This is a very common misunderstanding and I work hard to correct the confusion. Emergency contraception is a one time high dose of birth control pills that will prevent a conception from happening by preventing ovulation or by thickening cervical mucous so sperm can't get through. Emergency contraception will NOT terminate an existing pregnancy. RU-486 is also called Mifeprex (brand name). This drug is used up until 8 weeks gestation to terminate an existing pregancy. It is also called a non-surgical abortion pill or a medication abortion.
